Stormy weather looms over Houston as severe storms move into the region.
Houston is experiencing scattered showers and storms, particularly east of I-45. The Rio Grande Valley has recorded historic rainfall, with Harlingen receiving nearly 14 inches in a single day. McAllen also faced significant downpours with over 10 inches. As we move through today, expect more rain, especially in Liberty County, along with a minor risk of severe storms. Looking ahead, weather patterns suggest continued storm chances through the weekend. Locals have expressed concerns about the reliability of forecasts amid these unpredictable conditions.
Houston is bracing for scattered showers and storms today, with the heaviest rain expected to fall east of I-45. The forecast suggests that we might see some stronger storms in that area, so keep your umbrellas handy!
Meanwhile, down in the Rio Grande Valley, the weather really made headlines late Thursday into Friday. Harlingen experienced a remarkable downpour, recording nearly 14 inches of rain, marking it as their wettest day on record. That’s a staggering amount and is sure to have caused quite a bit of chaos!
McAllen wasn’t far behind, as it achieved its third wettest day ever with more than 10 inches of rain pouring down in just a few hours, specifically between 5 PM and 11 PM. Even Brownsville made headlines by landing on the top 25 wettest days list due to excessive rainfall. Talk about a wild weather event!
Other parts of the Houston area saw varying levels of rain too. Fulshear and Simonton faced locally heavy amounts of between 1 to 3 inches, and some southwest of Wharton and near Matagorda Bay recorded totals from 1 to 4 inches. Thankfully, Harris County saw less severe conditions, mostly getting half an inch or less of rainfall.
As we dive into today, the radar indicates some heavier showers, particularly in Liberty County. While some areas are experiencing calm conditions, it’s important to remember that more rain and thunderstorms are on the way later in the day. With scattered heavy downpours likely, especially east of I-45, it is essential to stay updated on the unfolding situation.
There’s also a minor risk of severe storms, rated at 1 out of 5, focusing on an area between Winnie and Lake Charles. Be aware that any storm that develops could bring gusty winds or, in rare cases, an isolated tornado. Yikes!
As for rainfall totals, Houston could expect around a half-inch of rain, with areas east of I-45 possibly seeing anywhere from 1 to 3 inches, or even more in localized spots. A flood alert has been issued, as there is a danger of localized street flooding in these areas. So, tread carefully!
Looking toward the weekend, Saturday is predicted to start off a bit cloudy, with potential fog and light showers lingering. But don’t fret! As the day progresses, we can expect more sunshine, lifting our spirits after an intense week of storms.
Sunday holds a bit more uncertainty. A passing disturbance may trigger thunderstorms north of I-10, particularly in spots like Navasota, Conroe, and Cleveland. But good news for those south of I-10, as storm chances seem pretty low!
As far as temperatures go, we’re looking at a rise from the upper 60s to the low 80s. A weak front might slide through on Sunday night or early Monday morning, potentially bringing more comfortable air along with it. Starting Tuesday or Wednesday, we may feel the return of that warm, humid air from the Gulf, with highs expected mainly in the 80s, creeping into the upper 80s by Wednesday.
Looking further into the upcoming week, a more unsettled weather pattern is anticipated, with increased thunderstorm chances returning late next week and into the weekend. Buckle up, folks! It looks like we’re in for another active weather stretch.
It’s worth noting that many locals have expressed dissatisfaction about the accuracy of weather forecasts lately. There have been mentions of previous discrepancies in rainfall predictions, particularly with some areas experiencing heavy rain while Houston remained relatively dry. It’s created an atmosphere of uncertainty, and many are eager for improvements in weather information systems.
As always, stay safe and keep an eye on updates as we navigate through this unpredictable weather. It’s Houston, after all, where anything can happen! Be kind to one another during these wet and wild days!
